The method for reducing traffic in London has been effective in lowering the levels of pollution. I strongly feel that this example should be followed elsewhere. It would bring tangible benefits to the environment, raise funds to improve and develop public transport and make the city more attractive to tourists.

In today’s world, we are all conscious of the dangers of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, which are caused by petrol or diesel-guzzling cars. While electric cars are still prohibitively expensive, people will continue to drive vehicles that pollute, but we can help to reduce this by banning them from city centres. Many towns today have a park-and-ride system with free parking outside the city and buses that take you into the centre.
London’s system has been extremely effective as a deterrent but also as a way of generating money. These funds can be redistributed into creating new underground lines, cycle paths and other green projects. With a better, more efficient public transport system with regular trains and clean, modern carriages, the incentive to drive into town would be significantly reduced. It is particularly pleasant, for example, to take the metro in Copenhagen where the trains are so regular that you never have to wait more than two minutes for the next one. For tourists, who want an easy way to go from A to B, this is a real advantage.
In conclusion, I believe that a similar project in other cities would be a good step in helping to reduce the damage we are doing to our planet, fill the public coffers and free up money to improve alternative means of transport and make the city more agreeable to visitors.
