John was an ordinary boy. He went to school daily just like all the other boys However everyone else treated him differently. They never let him join in the games they played during their recess. This made John a very lonely person.
Wherever John had walked. the other students would stop and glare at him. They looked upon him as though he had done something wrong. John only knew that he was treated differently because he did not look like them. John had blue eyes as clear and bright as the sky.
One line day a new girl. Mary joined their class. Mary had some illness and was shunned by the other students as well. Seeing this, John tried to be friends with Mary. The two became very close to each other. They would spend their recess together. At times they would watch the yellow birds chirping on the branch. Occasionally they would sing songs but most of the time they would chase after the beautiful butterflies.
Everywhere John went. Mary would be by his side. The two had grown I to enjoy each other's company and could not be ported. There was a special friendship between them.
One day before school ended, Mary placed a small tear-shaped pebble in John's little hands and hugged him tightly.
"I want you to have this as a gift. The doctor said that I have a very important appointment tomorrow and might not be able to come to school any more." She said with tears welling in her eyes as she left.
John stared blankly as Mary left. Since that day. Mary was never seen again. John kept the pebble with him in his pocket. He would never forget Mary, his one and only true friend.
