THE OLDEST CHILD IN THE FAMILY
Hi, lam Jing Tian from China and I hated being the oldest child and the only girl in my family when I was younger. But now that i am older, l realize that being “Big Sister” actually has its advantages. First of all, ! get special treatment from my parents and brothers. l get my own room, and brothers have to do all the heavy work around the house. Another benefit is that, being the oldest, I have learned to be responsible and dependable. For example, my parents often leave my bf other 5 in my care when they go out. So, even though l didn’t choose to be the oldest child and the only girl in my family, I have succeeded in making this situation work to my best advantage.
Hi, lam Ranjeet from Pakistan and ! truly have to tell you that there are struggles being the eldest son in the family. First of all, since ! am the first, my parents always expect me to become their ideal son. They are always the hardest on me as I have to be the role model for my younger brothers. Everytime when I have a mistake, my parents repeat it over and over again to teach my siblings not to do so. It’s so embarrassing. Also, l have to look after my brothers whenever my parents are not home. They are always running around, making noises, breaking things and it’s a total disaster for me.
WHERE IS PIZZA FROM?
Pizza is certainly one of the world’s favorite foods. But where does pizza come from? And who made the first one? in fact, people have been making pizza for a very long time. People in the Stone Age cooked grains on hot rocks to make dough the basic ingredient of pizza. Over time, people used the dough as a plate, covering it with various other foods, herbs, and Spices. They had developed the world’s first pizza.
In the early 16th century, European explorers brought back the first tomatoes from the Americas. Tomatoes are a standard ingredient in many pizzas today. At first, however, most Europeans thought they were poisonous (in fact, only the leaves and roots are). For about 200 years, few people ate them.
Slowly, people learned that tomatoes were safe to eat, as well as tasty. In the early 19²“ century, cooks in Naples, Italy, started the tradition of putting tomatoes on bakìng dough. The flat bread soon became popular with poor people all over Naples. In 1830, cooks in Naples took another big step in pizza history they opened the world’s first pizza restaurant.
Today, up to five billion pizzas are served every year around the world. In the U.S. alone, about 350 slices are eaten every second!
WHICH ENGLISH WILL WE SPEAK?
English is called an international language, but there are actually quite a few varieties of English that exist around the world. Today, the countries in which English is spoken can be divided into three groups.
The first group is made of those countries where English is the primary language. These are countries like England, Canada, the United States, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. There are more than 380 million native speakers of
English in these countries alone.
There is a second group of countries that have their own varieties of English. They use English in various important ways within their own government and everyday life. India, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Kenya are examples of this group. The total number of speakers in this group is in the hundreds of millions.
In a third group of countries, English is widely used as a foreign language. However, citizens use their native language within their own government and in everyday life. Some countries in this group are China, Russia, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Indonesia, and many Western European countries. The estimated number of speakers in this group to be as many as one billion and it is growing fast.
This changing situation raises many questions. Will new varieties of English develop in countries such as China or Brazil? Or, in the future, will a new international variety of English develop that doesn’t belong to any one country, by to an entire area like Asia or Europe?
A CAREER GUIDE
The kind of career you have can affect your life in many ways. For example, it can determine where you live and the friends you make. It can reflect how much education you have and can determine the amount of money you earn.
Your career can also affect the way you feel about yourself and the way other people act toward you. To make wise career decisions and plans, you need as much information as possible. The more you know about yourself and career opportunities, the better able you will be to choose a successful career.
People differ in what they want from a career. Before you begin to explore career fields, you should determine your values, your interests, and your abilities. Most people are happiest in jobs that fít their values, interests, and aptitudes. Each person has many values, which vary in strength. For example, money is the strongest value for some people. As a result, they focus their thoughts, behaviour, and emotíons on the goal of earning a high income.
People should understand their values prior to making a career decision. You can develop an understanding of your values by asking yourself what is most important to you. For example, is it important to you to work as a member of a team? Or would you rather be in charge or work alone? If working alone or being in charge is important to you, independence is probably one of your primary values.
