Fifty years ago the marathon was a minority sport, but it started to change in the 1970s. Today, marathon races are huge events attracting thousands of runners of all types: world champions, keen amateurs, women as well as men, old and young, disabled people, and many who will only ever run one marathon.

ln August 2016, engineers at the European Space Agency (ESA) realised that something was wrong with their most important observation satellite. They quickly worked out that the satellite, orbiting 35 000 kilometres from the earth, had been hit by a tiny piece of debris. ’lt could have been something like a piece of soap,’ says one engineer. ’That might seem strange, but all sorts of things have been left in space and they travel at very high speeds over ten kilometres per second.’ Fortunately, the engineers were able to carry out repairs. Satellites and spacecraft require millions of dollars of investment, however, and the incident was a reminder that one day a very expensive piece of technology could be destroyed by space litter.

One of my hobbies is reading books.
I have read books since I was 8 years old.
I started reading books because my mum often gave me interesting books and encouraged me to read. She told me it was a good hobby so | followed her advice and I found it wonderful.
I think reading books brings me a lot of benefits. It’s a great source of entertainment as books contain tons of exciting stories from all over the world. I can also broaden my knowledge of different fields. Besides, l can have fun in my own private world without having to go anywhere.

Tôi bắt đầu đọc sách vì mẹ tôi thường tặng tôi những cuốn sách thú vị và khuyến khích tôi đọc. Bà ấy nói với tôi rằng đó là một sở thích tốt vì vậy tôi đã làm theo lời khuyên của bà và tôi thấy nó thật tuyệt vời.
Tôi nghĩ rằng đọc sách mang lại cho tôi rất nhiều lợi ích. Đó là một nguồn giải trí tuyệt với vì sách có rất nhiều câu chuyện thú vị từ khắp nơi trên thế giới. My favourite place of interest is the Temple of Literature which is the first university of Viet Nam.
I always want to go there with my classmates, because i will have a good time with them. Besides, this Temple is a perfect destination for students like me.

I love this place because of its majestic atmosphere and the stone records of successful students in the past motivate me to study harder and harder.

Environmental protection is one of the most important challenges almost every country is facing. However, whether only governments and big firms have resources and powers to preserve our environment is a controversial issue. My view is that every single citizen could also make a huge difference.

The applications of new technologies are one of the most important ways of making billionaires such as Bill Gates. However, whether the technology has also widened the gap between the rich and the poor is a controversial issue. My view is that the improper distribution system of social wealth, rather than modern technology, has caused such a social problem.
First, it is obvious that the government is the one most capable of and responsible for solving any social issue and ensuring social equality. This is because in order to bridge this wealth gap, the most effective and direct method should be taxation leverage, by which the government can use the rich people’s tax money to subsidize the unfortunate. So, the technology should not become the scapegoat of the issue.
Moreover, modern technologies indeed have provided great opportunities for the poor to get rich. For example, the Internet has already made many people become wealthy by setting their own commercial websites. Compared with traditional industries which I require a large initial investment and higher operation cost, the Internet is a much better and cheaper platform to make a fortune for people from all social backgrounds.
Those who harbor the view that the technology has polarized the distribution of wealth around the world believe that the poor countries now are getting poorer due to lack of creative technologies to improve the social productivity. Of course, this is a real phenomenon. But paradoxically, the right solution for those nations is just to introduce advanced technologies from developed countries and increase their education budget.
In sum, modern technology plays a key role in filling the gap between the rich and the poor not only for individuals, but for nations as well. In the era of the knowledge-based economy, the one who is diligent, smart enough and can capitalize on knowledge and create knowledge will eventually prevail.

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are concerned about animal protection and animal rights. However, whether we should utilize animals for the human purposes has caused heated debate recently. In my view, it is acceptable to reasonably exploit animals for the benefit of mankind and impossible to completely cut down the humans’ dependence on animals.
First, it is clear that human beings are standing at the top of the food chain of this planet. As big fishes eat small ones, mankind uses animals for its own benefits, which is consistent with the natural law. So, it is hard to state that we are doing wrong by exploiting animals for our interests.
Moreover, it is unrealistic to ban using animals. Regardless of our awareness, animals have made great contributions to the history of human civilization. We raise cattle for food; the outcomes of animal experiments save many lives; people even keep pets to satisfy their psychological needs. If it is wrong to exploit animals for human interests, we should first close thousands of KFC’s and McDonald’s franchises around the world, because they are slaughtering lovely chicken to make money. And everyone in this world should become a vegetarian.
This is not to say that it is always right for people to use animals for whatever purpose. Some people hunt Wild animals just for fun; others kill rare animals for their expensive l furs. Indeed, these behaviors are not only cruel and unnecessary, but actually against long-term interests of human race. Humans should shoulder their responsibilities of maintaining the diversity of Wild animals and the balance of ecosystem.
In sum, using animals rationally for the benefit of humans is justified; meanwhile, some behaviors that are harmful to both animals and humans have to be prohibited. By doing so, we can ensure that our next generation could also exploit the animal resource.

LI DANIELS COOKERY COMPETITION WINNER.
Li Daniels grew up in the Malaysian city of Malacca, eating food influenced by Malay, Chinese, Indian and other food cultures. When she moved to Liverpool in the UK to study economics, she found things tough. Everything seemed so different, but the hardest thing to get used to was the food. 'I missed Malaysian food so much,’ says Li. And she had no idea how to cook. Malaysians usually learn from their mothers, but Li’s mother had always banned her from the kitchen. So, Li taught herself. She made mistakes at first, but soon grew to love cooking.
Li arrived in the UK ten years ago. She is now married to Chris Daniels, a businessman, and they have a three-year old son. They live in Liverpool, though their intention is to move to London in the next few months.’It’d be more convenient for me,’ says Li.
Besides cooking family meals, Li enjoys organising dinner parties for friends. About a year ago, someone suggested Li should try The Big Taste, a cookery competition on television. 'It was Gina, a colleague from the bank l'd recently joined,’ says Li.'l’d moved there from an insurance company! Li had never dreamed of entering a cookery competition, let alone Winning one and becoming a full-time chef. ’It’s incredible how my life’s changed because of what Gina said, says Li.’l’m even opening my own cafe later this year!
Li entered The Big Taste with 50 other hopefuls. She survived ten weeks of challenges, from creating a tasty packed lunch to preparing a five-course meal for a special celebration, before reaching the final. ’Cooking for a top hotel was my personal highlight,’ says Li.
It was an emotional experience for Li. 'I was really excited at first, but when the final became a possibility, l got very nervous.’ In the last round, however, she was calm and cooked a wonderful seafood dish to win the contest. ’It was extraordinary,’ said one of the judges.
Li won over viewers from the very first episode. They loved her warm character, and while many probably knew little about Malaysian cooking, they adored her creative approach. Her success brought her lots of attention from industry experts. Soon after her win, a publisher invited her to write a cookery book, and simply titled Cooking with Li, it has just been published.
Li was also asked to supply some well-known restaurants with recipes and she says that will happen by the end of the year.
Li bases her recipes on traditional south-east Asian dishes, but she experiments with them. Her sister and a few friends help her with ideas, and her husband tastes every recipe she comes up with. ’His opinion’s important to me,’ she says.
Before she started work on the cookery book, Li had concerns about whether she was a good enough writer.Those doubts soon disappeared, but there was one unfortunate consequence of working on lots of new dishes: she put on over five kilos in weight. ’It’s one of the dangers of the job,’ she says.
Li is now busier than ever. Besides looking after her family and promoting her book, she gives demonstrations at food festivais and in restaurants. She is also preparing to launch a cookery school next year, and she is in discussions with a television company and hopes to start fiming a documentary series about spices in the coming few months.
’The Big Taste changed my life says Li.’l do so many different things now. I couldn't survive without my diary. I depend on it more than my cooker or my kitchen knives!’

This is where most basic and specialist information is gathered from the majority of occupations and fields in our life. There are countless websites that contain useful information for research and study, and Wikipedia is now considered to be the most complete and accurate encyclopedia. Searching the Internet is simple, but we should also be careful in getting that information. Not all knowledge on the Internet is accurate and complete, so we need to compare information from many different sources before actually using any of them for our purposes. The Internet is an infinite ocean of knowledge, and we can learn countless things if we know how to use it properly.

Có vô số các trang mạng chứa đựng những thông tin hữu ích cho việc nghiên cứu và học tập, và hiện nay Wikipedia được xem là một trang mạng bách khoa toàn thư đầy đủ và chính xác nhất. Việc tra cứu trên Internet rất đơn giản, nhưng chúng ta cũng nên thận trọng trong việc tiếp nhận những thông tin đó. Không phải toàn bộ kiến thức trên Internet đều chính xác và đầy đủ, vậy nên chúng ta cần so sánh thông tin từ nhiều nguồn khác nhau trước khi thật sự sử dụng bất kì chi tiết nào cho mục đích của mình. Internet là một biển kiến thức vô tân, và chúng ta sẽ học được vô số thứ nếu chúng ta biết sử dụng nó một cách hợp lý.

Most of my friends love dogs and cats, but I have a totally different favorite animal from them which is elephant. Elephants are the largest mammal that lives in land, and they have a lot of interesting characteristics along with their impressive size. The most distinctive figure of elephants is their long trunks, which can serve as noses, weapons, and tools for moving objects or digging. They use their trunks in almost all of their activities such as picking leaves or fruits, drinking water, and hanging above the surface to breathe when they have to cross the deep rivers. They have large ears which serve as a pair of fans, and they flap their ears whenever they feel hot in order to control their body temperature. Despite their enormous size, they are actually herbivorous animal which means that they only eat plants during their lifetime. Elephants are intelligent animals, and study shows that they can even have emotions. They show clear signs of interest in some kinds of animal, they express concern towards the sick members of the group, and they are easily taught to do tricks. Because of their impressive appearance as well as their intelligence, many people all over the world had never stopped taking advantages on them. They are captured and being taken away from the wild so that people can force them to perform in the circuses and zoos. Besides being a form of entertainment, elephants also in a great threat of be killed by the poachers who want to take away their valuable tusks. Scientists had proved that elephant tusks had no use in medical, so I hope one day people will stop hunting down those lovely creatures for their useless purposes. Elephant is one of the endangered species, and it will disappear forever if people do not have some really effective ways to protect them. Since I love elephant so much, I hope one day I can take part in some projects to save this magnificent animal.

Voi là một trong những loài động vật có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng, và chúng sẽ biến mất mãi mãi nếu con người không thật sự có những biện pháp hiệu quả để bảo vệ chúng. Bởi vì tôi rất yêu thích loài voi, tôi hi vọng một ngày nào đó tôi có thể tham gia vào những dự án bảo vệ loài động vật đẹp đẽ này.
